Improvised Street Theatre

In the summer of 1993, an improvised street performance was created through the collaborative work of young people in Ballymun, Red Street Theatre, and Wet Paint Arts.

Confronting a series of assaults occurring in the concrete tunnels connecting Ballymun’s seven tower blocks, this project made a powerful galvanising statement that demanded immediate political action.

The performance was created using costumes and props made from salvaged materials—found in skips and domestic spaces. The result was a one-time performance that drew an audience of over two thousand people.

This project is a testament to the power of grassroots artistic interventions in effecting social change and highlights the crucial role of creative practices to address societal issues.
