Encounters with three troopies, Todd Mall, Alice Springs

Watch video

I am vigilant, in a sensory way, for entities that appear out of place, time, or typical form. A visitation of something that catches my attention. And so, in 2019, over three consecutive nights, three strangely lit troopies visited Todd Mall and Roe Creek at Honeymoon Gap – Angatyepe, central Australia.

These troopies unassumingly presented a world composed of entities and relations far richer and differential than I had previously thought.

Throughout their visit, I learnt that my task was to come to know them as variations manifesting of specific timeplacematters. They are not metaphors standing in for something else, nor do they outsource their existence elsewhere.

The pleasure of encountering the tendencies, predilections, and orientations of these troopies was to keep my orientations and trajectories open so that they could continue their journeys unabated, without me collapsing them back into a singularity where they stayed as familiar, well-known entities.

On encounter, these three troopies shimmered a different arrangement of storied existence.
